Portrait of Bassem

Hello, I’m

Bassem Abdelsamih

I am a cybersecurity student building hands-on experience in networking, servers, Python, system administration, and security.

About Me

Getting to know me

I’m from Long Island, New York, and I value personal growth, hands-on learning, and continuously challenging myself to improve.

I have always been curious about how things work. That curiosity began with computers when I received my first one at eleven years old. I started researching computer hardware, learning how hardware worked, and helping friends troubleshoot their devices. Over time, that interest grew into building projects, working with servers, and exploring networking, programming, and security.

Outside of technology, I enjoy working out, spending time with people close to me, and finding new ways to become more disciplined and dependable. I enjoy setting goals for myself and seeing the progress that comes from staying consistent.

I learn best by doing. Whether I am improving my home lab, working on a personal project, or learning a new skill, I enjoy turning ideas into something practical and learning from the challenges along the way.

Experience

Summer Program

Research and Data Science

Brookhaven National Laboratory

Data Science and Applications

I took part in a technical summer program where I worked with Python, data analysis, machine learning, and large datasets. It gave me a better understanding of how programming is used outside of the classroom and how technical teams approach real research problems.

Systems and Cybersecurity

Suffolk County Community College

Cybersecurity & Information Assurance Associates Degree

Through my coursework, I have configured Windows and Linux servers, worked with Active Directory, created DNS records, managed certificates, and troubleshot networking problems. These labs helped me become more comfortable working through errors instead of immediately starting over.

Personal Home Lab

Networking, Servers and Security Practice

I built a small home lab so I could practice outside of school. I use it to run services, manage Linux systems, experiment with Docker, monitor activity with Wazuh, and troubleshoot issues across my own network.

The home lab is still growing, and I regularly use it to test something new or better understand a topic that I am studying.

What I’m Working Toward

Earn My Certifications

I am currently working toward earning certifications like CompTIA Network+ and Security+ so I can continue building a strong foundation in networking and cybersecurity.

Gain Real Experience

One of my biggest goals is to get an internship or entry-level position where I can apply what I have learned and continue growing around experienced IT and cybersecurity professionals.

Keep Building My Home Lab

I want to continue improving my home lab by working with servers, virtual machines, Linux, Active Directory, networking, and security monitoring tools.

Create Better Projects

I want to build more projects that show what I can actually do, including Python programs, networking labs, cybersecurity labs, and web development projects.

Finish My Degree

I plan to complete my cybersecurity degree and continue my education while gaining as much hands-on experience as possible.

Start My Cybersecurity Career

My long-term goal is to work in cybersecurity or network administration and help protect and support real systems.

Projects

01

Cybersecurity and Networking

Personal Home Lab

Built a home lab where I run services, manage Linux systems, work with Docker, configure virtual machines, and practice network troubleshooting. I use the lab to test new ideas and gain experience outside of the classroom.

Security Monitoring

Wazuh SIEM Lab

Set up Wazuh in my home lab to learn how security monitoring platforms collect logs, monitor system activity, and identify possible security concerns. This project helped me better understand alerts, log analysis, and system monitoring.

Systems Administration

Active Directory Server Lab

Configured a Windows Server environment using Active Directory, DNS, users, groups, Group Policy, certificates, and additional server roles. I also practiced replication, permissions management, and troubleshooting within the domain.

Web Development

Personal Portfolio Website

Designed and developed this portfolio website to present my experience, technical skills, projects, and career goals. Building it has helped me improve my knowledge of responsive layouts, navigation, styling, and JavaScript interactions.
